I
think it never was the country you thought it was. I have gone
through many decades of disillusionment about the U.S.A. This country was
founded after robbing the land from the people living here. Then the
early Americans began buying and importing Africans on a large scale.
Voting was restricted to white male property owners. It was not until
1856 that "property owner" was removed from the requirements for voting.
When I were growing up, black people were 2nd class citizens. But
there was plenty of prejudice against other groups also, Jews
especially. Have you seen the movie "Giant"? It was partly about
prejudice against Mexicans in Texas.
It
got better for a long time, but in the past 30 years, the very wealthy
have captured control of the country again. That's partly by bribing our
congress, but a more serious thing is the long term deterioration in
our free education system. The wealthy send their kids to private
schools or have good local schools in their neighborhood. We would not
have had Trump as president if most Americans had a good education.
